Synopsis:
A housewife, Christine Penmark (Nancy Kelly) seems to have it all : a lovely home, a loving husband (William Hopper) and the most ”perfect” daughter (chillingly portrayed by ten year old Patty McCormack) in the world. Until she begins to realize that her perfect 8 year old daughter’s accomplishments include lying, theft and possibly much much worse.
Alfred Hitchcock turned down the chance to direct.
Bette Davis had expressed an interest in playing Christine Penmark, but director Mervyn LeRoy insisted on casting Nancy Kelly who had originated the role on Broadway in 1954 and won a Tony Award. McCormack, Heckart, Jones, among others, also reprised their stage roles.
Both McCormack and Kelly were nominated for Oscars.
Future TV stars appeared in small, uncredited roles: Frances Bavier (”The Andy Griffith Show”), Shelley Fabares (”The Donna Reed Show”), Kathy Garver (”Family Affair”)
