This was Herbie’s first album under his name! Listened to side one and liked all but loved cut #3, Empty Pockets. A very seasoned classic jazz groove.I feel very fortunate to have this album in my collection.
Cut 1 leads strong! This the classic Rendition of Watermellon Man! An all time favorite classic. Freddie Hubbard distinguishes himself on tis one. Dexter Gordon answered the call during his solo on the cut. Cut 2 was nice listening jazz that I would love to be in an intimate lounge setting to hear them play. Herbie shows his chops as a Jazz Pianist on “Three Bags Full.” ++ “Empty Pockets.”
A unique feature to this album is that it was reissued in 2017 but the photography for the album was by Jean-Pierre Leloir (1931-2010 (www.jazzimagesrecords.com) who was a well known photographer of the jazz life in France in the 50’s and 60’s. The album cover with Herbie sitting in his underwear and a shirt with a lit cigaret looking very thoughtful and pensive. Great imagery.
