Wreck-Gar Wreckgar Wreck Gar

Wreck-Gar (Voyager, 2008/2010)

Known designers: Eric Siebenaler (Hasbro)

Part of the sixth wave of Hasbro Animated Voyager-class toys, Wreck-Gar transforms into a garbage truck with articulated lifting-forks. Pushing a small spring-loaded lever on the back of either of the lifting forks will extend the fork forward. The tips of the forks can also rotate, but this doesn’t serve a whole lot of purpose. The sliding lever on the top of the truck’s bin exposes both of his weapons from slots in the rear. These blade- or scissor-like weapons can attach to his forearms via the rear wheels on each arm (the central hub is stationary so the blades don’t spin freely), or combine into a single bladed weapon which can also attach to either of his forearms. (Don’t run with them!) His transformation involves pulling nearly his entire robot mode out from under the truck mode, meaning he wears his vehicle mode like a backpack, which severely restricts his waist articulation and makes him very back-heavy. However, you don’t care because Wreck-Gar is awesome, and it’s show-accurate, and the lifting forks can be used to support that weight and keep him upright.
A number of Wreck-Gars have a problem with their right shoulders that causes the pin to move out of its position when the shoulder is moved during transformation. It is currently unknown if this would eventually cause the pin to pop out completely.
The later TakaraTomy release of Wreck-Gar (coincidentally also released in the sixth wave of TakaraTomy Animated product) looks mostly identical to the Hasbro version at first glance, cast in the same plastic colors and using the same paint layouts for detailing, but there’s some small but significant paint differences. The most immediately noticeable one is that TakaraTomy Wreck-Gar’s Autobot symbol is red with a white outline, rather than the Hasbro version’s silver symbol. The trash bin and front grill have been given a coat of light metallic silver paint, and (almost) all of his burgundy plastic has been painted over in a glossier, brighter, more primary red (the bits on the sides of his head are missing this paint, leaving them burgundy). Even the tan paint on the tuning forks, while the same tone as the Hasbro version, has a metallic shimmer to it rather than the Hasbro release’s matte tan.
