Description:
FORENSIC CRASH UNIT 50 YEAR COMMEMORATIVE CHALLENGE COIN
The Friends of the Queensland Police Museum have gratefully produced a limited edition challenge coin to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the commencement of the Traffic Accident Appreciation Squad (TAAS), now known as the Forensic Crash Unit (FCU).
A little bit of History:
On 1 June 1970, the Traffic Accident Appreciation Squad (TAAS) commenced operation. The initial squad of twenty-one officers was made up of plain clothes detectives and uniformed officers. In the late 1970s, the detectives returned to CIB and the unit became the Traffic Accident Investigation Squad (TAIS), staffed entirely by uniformed officers, as it is today. In 1992 the squad was renamed the Accident Investigation Squad (AIS) and its brief was broadened to include the investigation of incidents on the rail network, industrial sites and aircraft crash scenes where a fatality was involved.
In 2004 the Forensic Crash Unit (FCU) was adopted as being more reflective of the type of investigations undertaken. ‘Forensic’ relating to the use of science or technology in the investigation and establishment of facts or evidence in a court of law. ‘Crash’ to hit something hard enough to cause serious damage or destruction and ‘Unit’ to better reflect a more professional approach to investigations.
To purchase a fantastic limited edition FCU Challenge Coin email OIC Forensic Crash Unit or ph 3364 3311 or purchase direct from QSHOP located next to the Queensland Police Museum on the ground floor of QPS Headquarters.

These limited-edition coins were struck to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Forensic Crash Unit which was originally formed on 1 June 1970 as the Traffic Accident Appreciation Squad. The unit later became known as the Traffic Accident Investigation Squad; Accident Investigation Squad and it is currently known as the Forensic Crash Unit. The name Forensic Crash Unit was chosen to pivot from the use of the word “accident” which has connotations of an event that happens by chance or that is without apparent or deliberate cause. The obverse side depicts the badge of the FQPM which is based on the Queensland Police helmet badge in use from 1906 – 1960. The reverse side depicts two crash investigators from the 1980s. A limited number of coins remain for sale, and they will not be reproduced.
