Unable to kill Carthan because of a protective aura about him, Xandor exiles Carthan to Earth. Knowing of the Justice League, Carthan is unable to contact them telepathically, however believes he can trick them into helping him stop Xandor if he pretends to be evil.
As the JLA considers who will be the next super-hero inducted into their ranks, Carthan sends an arrow with a message telling them of ultra weapons which will destroy the Earth if the Justice League does not stop them. The JLA decides to split up into groups and tackle the problem head on.
Martian Manhunter and Wonder Woman seek the first doomsday weapon in Keystone City, and have to battle giant animals - insects, birds, and cats - that have been mutated by the weapon. Defeating their attackers, they succeed in switching the device off using its invisible handle. While Flash and Aquaman race to Australia where they have to search for the device with the help of Aquaman’s undersea friends. After locating the device, the Flash’s super counter-vibrations allow Aquaman to get close enough to the machine to disable it by its control lever. And finally, Green Lantern tackles the last device located near Italy, battling movie prop aliens brought alive by the last machine protected by their yellow coloring, he uses his power ring to create petrified wood around them before shutting off the machine.
While this is going on, Superman and Batman have located Carthan’s ship, and the two heroes board and find that Green Arrow is Carthan’s prisoner. Also, Carthan has captured the other JLA members and imprisoned them in a giant crystal. However, before Carthan can explain his situation, Superman, Batman and Green Arrow attack damaging the device that can free the other members in the crystal. Using a diamond tipped arrow, Green Arrow manages to destroy the diamond prison that is holding the other heroes by firing at the crystal’s stress point. After hearing Carthan’s story, the JLA offers to aid him in overthrowing Xandor, however Carthan declines stating that it is his own fight. Returning to their headquarters, the JLA votes in Green Arrow as their newest member.
Synopsis for The Menace of the ”Atom” Bomb!
This story is reprinted from Justice League of America #14.
While putting in a vote to determine which hero to induct into the Justice League, each member is shocked to find that they have all voted for the Atom, a hero of whom they have no memory. Using his power ring, Green Lantern is able to inform the group that the Atom is a hero located in Ivy City who has size changing powers. The group decides to send Martian Manhunter to Ivy City where he can learn more about the hero they all apparently voted for.
While giving testimony in a court case, the Atom himself finds himself suddenly struck with amnesia along with everyone in the room by Mr. Memory. While the judge, jury, and everyone else tries to grab the Atom, he manages to make his escape out an open window. Meanwhile, the Justice League arrives in their various cities of operation, and are attacked by a group of foes who erase their memories and take them hostage. Green Lantern is defeated by Hector Hammond, the Flash by the Pied Piper, Aquaman by Sea-Thief, Wonder Woman by Angle Man, Green Arrow by Dr. Davis, and Martian Manhunter by a strange robed figure just as he finds Atom, who shrinks to microscopic size to avoid being grabbed by the Manhunter.
With his memory restored due to the sudden size shrink, the Atom goes to the heroes’ rescue, and manages to free them from an atomic bowling-ball trap and use Green Lantern’s power ring to restore their memory. Defeating all the criminals, they unmask the robed figure and learn that it’s Batman who has also become victim to the amnesia ray. Tracking down Mr. Memory to his control room, they learn that he’s really their foe, Amos Fortune, who has been using an amnesia device to get revenge on the League. With Amos and the other criminals turned over to the police, the Justice League induct the Atom into their membership, providing him with a special floating miniature chair and miniature emergency signaling device.
Synopsis for ”Riddle of the Runaway Room!”
This story is reprinted from Justice League of America #31.
The Justice League of America has once again selected a new member to join their ranks - Hawkman. The Atom presents Hawkman with this honor while he and Hawkgirl deliver presents to children. Hawkman accepts to invitation and is taken to JLA headquarters and given his membership plaque as well as a JLA emergency signal. After the festivities, all the JLA members leave on cases except Hawkman, Wonder Woman, Batman, Flash and Green Lantern. They are suddenly altered of criminals who have magical hoops which protect them from everything.
Although the crooks get away, the JLA learns that their devices transport whatever passes into the crooks range 10 minutes into the future. They also learn that it works in reverse and they are able to stop the getaway car by dumping broken glass on the road 10 minutes after they passed a certain stretch.
While the JLA returns to headquarters to try and figure out what created these weapons, we learn that it was the work of a small time crook named Joe Parry, who stumbled upon an alien device which could grant whatever he wished. Ordering it to kill the Justice League by getting rid of their air, the device causes the JLA’s meeting room to shoot up into space. Quick thinking by the Green Lantern and new member Hawkman allows for the JLA to survive the attack.
Tracking the energy source of the attack to its source, the JLA try to capture Parry. However, he created a creature that’s a combination of different parts of each of the JLA members he’s facing (Head of Wonder Woman, wings of Hawkman, upper body of Batman, legs of the Flash and arms of Green Lantern). While the other JLA members are knocked unconscious, Hawkman feigns being knocked out by the creatures power ring (in actuality, since it was created from a yellow energy which Green Lantern’s power ring could not effect, the duplicate power ring was in in fact powerless), and with his anti-gravity devices make it look like the JLA are being shot into space again.
However, when the other JLA members revive, they drop on the creature crushing it to death. When Parry attempts to use the device again to defeat the JLA, they learn that the device has run out of power and is useless and Parry is quickly turned over to the police. The JLA takes the device and puts it in their trophy room.
