Title:
The Amazing Spider-Man 92 🔑
Synopsis:
When Iceman Attacks! 🔑1st battle with Iceman
Synopsis for ”When Iceman Attacks!”
Spider-Man has just been confronted by Sam Bullit and Gwen Stacy at Peter Parker’s apartment. Spider-Man, hoping to talk sense into Gwen, grabs the girl and makes an exit. However, this is spotted by Bobby Drake, who is out on a date. He changes into Iceman and attacks Spider-Man, whom he thinks will harm the girl, forcing Spidey to make an escape. Bullit thanks Iceman for his help and asks him to track down and capture Spider-Man.
After continuing his law and order campaign to obtain the D.A. chair, Bullit is contacted by J. Jonah Jameson, who tells him that he’s dropping the Bugle’s endorsement of him. When Bullit and his goons show up at the Bugle, Jameson explains that he will no longer endorse a candidate with shady dealings, revealing that he knows about how Bullit and his men roughed up Peter Parker. To add to the damaging evidence against Bullit, Joe Robertson has dug up Bullit’s background, which involves dealing with extremist and racist groups.
When Bullit and his men kidnap Joe, Peter Parker witnesses the whole event and goes after Bullit as Spider-Man. He’s initially stopped by Iceman but manages to convince him to help rescue Joe. The two heroes work in unison to free Joe, and the three of them confront Bullit during one of his fundraising banquets. When the truth about Bullit is revealed, the people in attendance of the banquet walk out on him, and Bullit is arrested shortly after.
Notes
Continuity Notes
Iceman states that he has been ”out of action” with the X-Men for a while. Iceman was injured during an altercation with his teammate Havok, as seen in Incredible Hulk #150.

Amazing Spider-Man #91-92
Issue(s): Amazing Spider-Man #91, Amazing Spider-Man #92
Cover Date: Dec 70 - Jan 71
Title: ”To smash the Spider!” / ”When Iceman Attacks”
Credits:

Gil Kane - Penciler
Tony Mortellaro & John Romita Sr. - Inker
Review/plot:
Gwen, blaming Spider-Man for the death of her father, decides to work with dirty politician Sam Bullit, who got kicked off the force and is now running on a law and order platform.
Stacy’s support is enough to throw the liberals into confusion, and even JJ endorses him when he announces his intention to arrest Spider-Man. JJ’s endorsement outrages Robbie, since Bullit is a racist.
Meanwhile, Bobby Drake is attempting to get out of a date (because he’s gay) so when he sees Spider-Man swing by holding Gwen (Peter is terrorizing poor Gwen so that she doesn’t suspect his identity even though she and Sam Bullit saw him enter Peter Parker’s apartment window) he puts her in a cab. Like a true Kirby youth, Bobby is wearing a plaid purple suit jacket on his date. He mentions that he has been out of action for a while now that the X-Men are defunct.
Iceman and Spidey have their classic misunderstanding fight...
...and the Bullit starts bossing Iceman around, acting like Iceman works for him. Iceman is too dumb to put a stop to it.
Meanwhile Robbie has turned JJ around on Bullit, and Bullit has his thugs take Robbie to a warehouse in order to get the evidence that Robbie has been collecting connecting Bullit to racist organizations. Spider-Man and Iceman Team-Up and stop Bullit and his goons.
Gil Kane’s new favorite trick is to draw a big close-up of a character’s face, and then surround it with a relevant word or phrase. He does it like 3 times in these two issues, and he also did it in issue #89 (Where, where, where?).
Over the top but still good.
A letter in Amazing Adventures #16 (the Beast’s book) postulated that Iceman’s appearance here was basically a floater to see if Iceman could sustain his own series, and that sales of this issue didn’t merit it. The thought didn’t even occur to naive little old me, who was just happy to see a guest appearance.
Quality Rating: C+

Historical Significance Rating: 2
Chronological Placement Considerations: Per Jay D.’s comment, this needs to occur after X-Men: The Hidden Years concludes.
