The Basketball Diaries is based on Jim Carroll’s life story. Jim Carroll is a member of a seemingly unbeatable high school basketball squad, his life centres around the basketball court as it keeps his mind off his problems in his life which include, his best friend who is dying of leukaemia, his coach (”Swifty”) who takes unacceptable liberties with the boys on his team, teenage sexual dread, and an unhealthy appetite for heroin, all of these things are beginning to ruin on young Jim’s dream of becoming a basketball star. However Jim’s troubles are about to get a whole lot worse for him as his coach makes a pass at him and also he catches Jim using drugs on the court so he is kicked out of school. Soon, the dark streets of New York becomes a refuge to Jim as he can’t go home as he is too embarrassed that he’s ruined his dream of becoming a basketball star and he has no future and he can’t talk to his mother about his problems as he feels like he’s let her down. So Jim finds that his only real escape from the reality of his life and the streets is heroin, and soon he becomes addicted to it for which he steals, robs and prostitutes himself to get more of it. Only with the help of Reggie, an older neighbourhood friend who is an ex drug addict and with whom Jim took drugs with now and then, is he able to begin the long journey back to the life he had before.
