Wendell Rohr (Dustin Hoffman) is a torts lawyer taking on the gun lobby. Rankin Fitch (Gene Hackman) is the jury consultant for the Defendants and between them is the battle for the hearts and minds of the jury. But on the inside is Nicholas Easter (John Cusack), a juror, with a girlfriend, Marlee (Rachel Weisz), on the outside. They have a past and their own agenda.
