When a typhoon cripples their boat, the crew sails into the eye of the storm, where they discover a high-tech Russian communications and research vessel adrift. Only one Russian crew member is still alive, raving about ”intelligent lightning.” They soon discover that an alien life form has taken over the ship’s computers and is churning out mechanical warriors. With their own boat destroyed, the crew must battle the creature as the ship reenters the storm.

Jamie Lee Curtis has admitted to hating this film, calling it ”the worst movie ever made”. She added that she lobbied hard to have the director fired and replaced by Steve Miner, with whom she had made Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). However, he wasn’t available, as he was working on Dawson’s Creek (1998)).

John Bruno was about to start work on the visual effects for Titanic (1997) when the offer came through to direct his first feature. As of 2021, it remains the only motion picture he directed, the rest being documentaries and TV series.

In 1999, prolific French video game developer Cryo (also known as Cryo Interactive Entertainment) released on PlayStation ”Virus: It is Aware”, their action/horror third person shooter tie-in video game that was very loosely based on this movie. The game immediately fell into obscurity.
