“THIS IS A WONDERFUL FILM.”
- Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES

TERMS OF ENDEARMENT dazzled critics and audiences alike with its believable, insightful story of two captivating people, mother and daughter, unforgettably played by Shirley MacLaine and Debra Winger. Jack Nicholson turns in a great comic performance as MacLaine’s neighbor, a boozy, womanizing former astronaut and Jeff Daniel’s portrays Winger’s happy-go-lucky husband in one of his early roles.

Winner of five Academy Awards: Best Picture 1983; Best Actress — Shirley MacLaine; Best Supporting Actor — Jack Nicholson; Best Director and Best Adapted Screenplay — James L Brooks, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is packed with powerful performances and a story that will leave you laughing and crying like no film has before.

TRIVIA:

• John Lithgow was called in to replace another actor. His part was filmed in three days, during a break from filming FOOTLOOSE.

• As of 2024, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is one of five films with more than one nomination in the best actress category:

- ALL ABOUT EVE, 1950
(Anne Baxter, Bette Davis)
- SUDDENLY, LAST SUMMER, 1959
(Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor)
- THE TURNING POINT, 1977
(Anne Bancroft, Shirley MacLaine)
- TERMS OF ENDEARMENT, 1983
(Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger)
- THELMA AND LOUISE, 1991
(Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon)

This film also marks the second time that MacLaine had been nominated against one of her fellow cast members. She is also the only actress to have won the Oscar for any of these nominated performances.

• James L Brooks settled on Shirley MacLaine to play Aurora because “she was the only one who saw it as a comedy.

• The character of Garret Breedlove does not exist in Larry McMurtry’s original novel and was written specifically with Burt Reynolds in mind. Reynolds loved the script but was already committed elsewhere. Paul Newman and Harrison Ford turned down the role before Jack Nicholson signed on. In preparation, Nicholson talked with several real astronauts while in Houston.

• Real-life mother and daughter Janet Leigh and Jamie Lee Curtis were considered for the roles of Aurora and Emma.

• Jodie Foster turned down the role of Emma due to her commitment at Yale.

• This film marks the directorial debut of James L Brooks, who had worked previously only in television.

• This film marked Shirley MacLaine’s fifth Oscar nomination as Best Actress. It was her first win and well worth the wait as many regarded it as the best performance she had given up to that point.

• Mary Kay Place dubbed the voice of Doris during the scene in Garrett’s driveway after he was driven home by the two girls.

• As of 2024, TERMS OF ENDEARMENT is one of twenty-films to have won both leading and supporting acting Oscars.
