An interesting jazz composition by three masters of jazz led by Sonny Rollings. I state interesting because of the definite western flare portrayed mostly within the 1st, 4th, 5th and 6th cuts. Its hard to imagine how you make a western themed jazz album but the trio pulls it off without a hitch, if you will!
I hear more western styling in side two. Ray Brown is prominent in his musings. The album liner writer defines Rollins as having a hard and jagged edged performance which is correct, but it is not hardened or edgy. It is true bop performance that sounded better as my system warmed up and blended the musicians and made the music more cohesive. If you’re a jazz traditionalist you will revel at this album being in your collection.
