N.S.W. couldn’t be further away now, Peter’s direction on a sharp diversion into Curtis Mayfield ’Heartbeat’ and Beach Boys’ ’L.A.’ territory, two musical landmines anyone of sane mind surely would be making it their number one priority to avoid like a double dose of bubonic plague. Not Peter however, easy listening orchestral disco splashed soft rock at odds with his Willie Nelson vocal dialect, but being thirty three years later there’s not much can be done about it now. When ’Bi-Coastal’ impresses - hugely personal ’Simon’, rocker (by this album’s softer than ice cream standards) ’Hit in the Heart’ - Peter exudes a comfort and content that flows like warm honey, like the two elements were heaven sent. ’I Could Really Show You Around’ is a weak creative moment Neil Sedaka would run 20 miles from, ’One Step Over the Borderline’ full of those lyrical ”we’re livin’ on the edge of night” style clichés 80s rock in all its shapes and sizes would end up being clung to, like barnacles on a sunken ship. Doesn’t feel one iota singer/songwriter, no big revelation when other writers were involved here, Peter Allen himself always seemed happier when he had more creative control over his material.
