The dove is gentle, peaceful, and graceful. And, as a bird, it has the freedom to touch the earth or fly where it wills through the air.
With these images in mind, the dove is most often used as a symbol for the Holy Spirit. The descending dove offers the reminder that God sends his spirit into his people.
The symbol is often used in the Church in connection with baptism and confirmation.
The action of the Spirit is vividly portrayed in describing Jesus’ baptism: “...when Jesus also had been baptized, and was praying, the heaven was opened, and the Holy Spirit descended upon him in bodily form like a dove.” (Luke 3:21-22).
