Title:
Bumblebee Vol. 2 Retro Pop Highway #20
Description:
Bumblebee Vol. 2 Retro Pop Highway (Multi-pack, 2018)
Movie: Bumblebee
ID number: 20
Accessories: Detachable Gatling Gun, arm blade, battle-mask face, Uriad Mini-Cassette, Zauru Mini-Cassette, Uriad’s left and right blasters, Zauru’s left and right blasters
To commemorate the Bumblebee movie, this Studio Series Bumblebee is a redeco of the toy above based on the Volkswagen Beetle, featuring molded gold plastic and gold painted vehicle shells.
This set also has the addition of two Japanese-original Mini-Cassettes: Uriad, a color-swapped transparent redeco of Dairu, and Zauru, a predeco of Uruaz in the original Zaur colors, making collectors who wanted the combined Legout in the G1 colors have to get both Retro Rock and Retro Pop sets.
Studio Series Uriad is a redeco of Dairu, itself a recreated mold of Headmasters Dile. He transforms from cassette into what appears to be an Iguanodon. In cassette mode, he fits into the chest compartment of the original Blaster or Soundwave toys (and their various retooled reincarnations).
Uriad can also form the upper body of an unnamed humanoid combiner with Zauru... though it seems more likely he’s meant to combine with Zauru’s Decepticon mold-twin Uruaz. Uriad’s weapons become over-shoulder artillery in this mode.
Studio Series Zauru is a redeco of Uruaz, utilizing a recreated mold of Headmasters Zaur, transforming from mini-cassette into an Apatosaurus. Two silver cannons plug into the faux cassette tape holes near his hind legs. In tape mode, he fits into the chest compartment of the original Blaster or Soundwave toys (and their various retooled reincarnations).
Zauru can also form the legs of an unnamed humanoid combiner robot with Uriad... though it seems more likely he is intended to combine with Uriad’s heroic twin Dairu. His cannons become hip-mounted weapons in this form.
Despite appearing identical to Headmasters Zaur at first glance, there are a large number of tiny differences in the stickers and molding. The most noteworthy change is that his combined-mode feet have engineering errors; his right foot cannot fold all the way down as intended, but that barely matters as neither foot is actually long enough to touch the ground. His tape-mode top also has some raised ”bumps” to make the plastic surrounding the pin-hinges more sturdy, which means his tape sticker has to go over bumps the sticker was never designed to go over. And unlike the original Zaur toy, the four black Apatosaurus legs are made of die-cast, not plastic. Speaking of stickers, he also uses the Vintage G1 style of rubsign, with the full-red symbol and mirror-like silver border.
Uriad and Zauru were only available in a 2018 exclusive box set alongside a gold redeco of VW Bumblebee.
