The first Studio Series Soundwave is accurate to his appearance in Dark of the Moon and transforms into a fully-licensed Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in 19 steps, with both modes generously coated in metallic silver paint. He comes with a non-transforming Laserbeak figure—which can connect to Soundwave’s arm using a C joint in his feet or to his vehicle mode roof using a tab on his knees—along with a cardboard backdrop depicting the Decepticon camp in Namibia, Africa.
His headlight pieces have a tendency to pop off during transformation to robot mode thanks to some extremely tight clearances, and his metallic silver paint is prone to chipping in those spots. Soundwave also has molded drilled-rotor brake discs and brake calipers, a surprising detail for a mainline Transformers figure. For safety reasons, his face, hands, knee spikes, and Laserbeak are molded in soft plastic.
In what is most likely a coincidence, Laserbeak’s car roof connection tab is the perfect size to fit in Soundwave’s wheel rims, allowing him to perch on either of his shoulders (or his legs, if you’re feeling creative) while in robot mode.
Like the rest of the Deluxe figures in the same wave, Soundwave first saw release at Toys"R"Us shops in Malaysia and independent retailers in Hong Kong.
