Title:
Hot Rod Targetmaster (Robot Mode)
Description:
Opened Hot Rod (Targetmaster, 1987)
Accessories: Firebolt Targetmaster partner
Hot Rod was re-released with his new Nebulan Targetmaster partner Firebolt a year after the original release. The toy was retooled to have larger pegholes in his fists and his engine block so the Targetmaster gun would fit. As the original large stickers applied to Hot Rod’s thighs were frequently scraped away by the friction of moving his legs up and down during transformation, the Targetmaster version sported smaller decals that avoided this problem. Unlike the original figure, Targetmaster Hot Rod only ever featured black plastic feet. Amusingly enough, Targetmaster Hot Rod’s ”Firepower” stat is 7, which is actually lower than regular Hot Rod’s firepower stat of 10.Targetmaster Hot Rod’s packaging originally contained the erroneous blurb ”Firebolt transforms into Misfire’s weapon!”[1] This was fixed by a running change in two steps: First Misfire’s name was covered with a sticker that contained the correct name ”Hot Rod”; later shipments then came in boxes that had the correct name printed on them. Not originally released in Japan, the Targetmaster version of Hot Rod was later reissued by Takara as part of their The Transformers Collection series in 2004 (see below).
