The invasion of Normandy in June 1944 gave the Allied forces a foothold in Europe. The lack of ports limited the men and material that could be brought in, but even with the limited ports, almost one million men, more than a half-million tons of supplies and 177,000 vehicles had been landed by July 1, 1944. The combination of massive air bombardment and attacking ground troops on July 25th successfully blasted a hole through the German lines, allowing in General Payton’s U.S. Third Army. All knew that much more fighting awaited them, but the Allied forces held firm to the goal of victory.
