Title:
Jetfire with Comettor
Description:
Jetfire with Comettor (Giga-Con Class, 2003)
Takara ID number: MC-09
Takara release date: June 26, 2003
Accessories: Electronic shuttle engine/gun, 2 missiles, shield/landing gear
Released in the second wave of Armada Giga-Cons, Jetfire transforms into a futuristic space shuttle. He even features an opening cargo bay with surprisingly intricate screens sculpted on the inside of the right door; there’s not a lot of room in the bay when the doors are closed though, severely limiting its use as storage. When his engine/weapon’s tailfin is pushed back, it activates the original Generation 1 Autobot "laser” sound effect. Pushing the tail fin forwards (perhaps by placing the shuttle upright as if in launching mode) activates a rather garbled blast-off countdown sequence, followed by a "take off” sound, then followed by a series of radar "pings” that goes on just short of forever. Both sounds are also incredibly easy to trigger. Later releases of Jetfire altered the sounds to replace the countdown with other beeps.
His shuttle mode has numerous Mini-Con-activated gimmicks. The underside of his nosecone has a plug and socket designed to fit his pack-in partner Comettor in "landing gear” mode, giving Jetfire another (non-firing) gun. Plugging a Mini-Con onto the Powerlinx plug on his main engine flips out a pair of stabilizer fins from his sides, and also changes the electronic "laser” sound to a much more powerful-sounding blast sound. The Powerlinx plugs on each wing drop his wing-mounted bombs; the wings have additional slots separate from the gimmick to allow Mini-Cons to be attached without dropping the bombs.
In robot mode, Jetfire’s main engine becomes a hand-held cannon, and his rear landing gear assembly becomes an arm-mounted shield.
Jetfire can combine with Super Base Optimus Prime to form "Jet Prime”, replacing the regular Super Mode trailer legs and attaching Jetfire’s shield onto Prime’s chest as armor. His shuttle mode can also be carried by Overload’s weapons-trailer mode.
The Takara Legends of the Microns version of Jetfire has a variety of subtle changes. The white plastic is considerably brighter, and white paint has been applied to the insides of the forearms to make the combined mode legs look more cohesive. The gray and dark-gray plastics have been darkened slightly and switched from matte to metallic, and the bright red has changed to a darker shade. The re-entry burn deco on his nosecone has been dropped, as well as the gold vertical lines on the shins, while his shield gained blue fake chest "windows” and dark silver on several smaller details. Lastly, Jetfire’s eye deco has also been corrected from the Hasbro release, now being properly behind the clear visor instead of on top of it.
The Hasbro release of Jetfire was actually released in Japan, in very limited numbers, as part of a gift campaign in May, a month prior to the full Takara retail relaese.
This mold was also used to make the Transformers Collectors’ Club-exclusive Astrotrain. It would also have been used to make the partially different Universe Spacewarp, but that release was canceled.
