Title:
Inferno Robot Mode
Description:
Inferno (Mega Class, 1997)
Takara ID number: D-11
Takara release date: January 1998
Accessories: Mandible claw, spring-loaded missile launcher, 2 insect-leg missiles
Part of the first wave of year-two Mega toys in Hasbro’s Beast Wars line, Inferno transforms into a red fire ant. His beast mode mandibles are spring-loaded and conceal an spring-loaded missile launcher, revealed with a push of a lever on his insect forehead, pushing the launcher out of his mouth. This launcher can fire either one of his removable rear-insect-leg-segments, but maybe that’s not a great idea in beast mode. Both the mandibles and launcher are separately removable for conversion to robot mode, where they can both be "hand-held” weapons, though it is a bit more "show-accurate” to keep them together. His beast mode abdomen splits open to reveal a quad-jet thruster, with the abodmen panels forming propeller blades that spin with the push of a geared plunger on the thrusters. Again, this gimmick is usable in both modes, though this time it is no less ridiculous to use in beast mode than robot.
Despite his status as one of the more prominent characters in the show, Inferno was a notorious shelfwarmer. This is generally accepted to have been a result of him being severely heavypacked in cases, with at least two of him shipping in every single Mega-class case assortment of his year and often in greater numbers than his fellows. Combine that with his size class making him pricier, and you have a recipe for colonies of the guy being spotted on clearance as late as 2001.
The Takara release of Inferno, in the line’s sixth wave in January 1998, appears to have no noteworthy differences from the Hasbro release aside from packaging.
This mold was also used to make Antagony.
