Title:
83 Soundwave Bumblebee
Description:
Soundwave (Voyager Class, 2022)
Movie: Bumblebee
Hasbro ID number: 83
TakaraTomy ID number: SS-81
TakaraTomy release date: May 28, 2022
Accessories: Shoulder cannon, blaster, "Cybertron Falls” backdrop (1st version)
Part of the 15th wave of Studio Series Voyager Class toys, this Soundwave is an extremely accurate depiction of his appearance in the Bumblebee film. He transforms into a hovercraft that coincidentally evokes his alternate mode in Transformers vs. G.I. Joe "I Saw Three Ships”. He comes with a generic blaster and his signature shoulder cannon, both of which can store via 5mm ports on the sides of his vehicle mode but can also be attached via the prominent screw holes on the top which are also 5mm compatible.
Soundwave’s light-piping gimmick is sadly neutered as his visor is painted red rather than being translucent as the render on his packaging shows. But as all of the translucent plastic used in his mold is a smoky gray for his chest windows, including the chunk in the back of his head, this is probably for the best. Other differences with his promotional renders also include the ring of red dots around the tip of his cannon which are absent on the figure itself.
Studio Series Core Class Ravage in his Cybertronian cassette mode can store in Soundwave’s chest, allowing him to "eject” Ravage in robot mode or drop him out of the bottom of his vehicle mode. Ravage also includes a missile based on "Generation 1” Soundwave’s, which can plug into the end of his shoulder cannon. Said shoulder cannon can be held in Soundwave’s hands if it bugs you that that isn’t where his missile should go, but it’s not the most secure fit because the 5mm peg handle is too short for the rear of the weapon to properly clear Soundwave’s bulky forearms. Also, in what is most likely a lucky stroke of coincidence, Cybertron Laserbeak in hexagonal bomb mode can fit perfectly inside Soundwave’s chest as well.
Like all other Studio Series toys, the interior of the package is a display backdrop, the design of which depicts a war-torn Cybertron as it appears in the beginning of the film.
