Title:
N.E.S.T. Bumblebee
Description:
N.E.S.T. Bumblebee (Deluxe Class, 2022)
Movie: Bumblebee
Hasbro ID number: 77
Accessories: Sam Witwicky figurine, gatling gun, ”Canyon Attack” backdrop
Studio Series ”N.E.S.T. Bumblebee” is a desaturated gray and silver redeco of the above ”Offroad Bumblebee” figure, with repack of the Sam Witwicky figure originally included with 74BB Revenge of the Fallen Bumblebee. He also features clear green headlights and windows, and a different version of the NEST / Autobot emblem on his hood. Though not based on the films, Bumblebee’s color scheme of grey, with subtle green highlights, and an organization badge coincidentally evokes the Dark of the Moon Autobot Daredevil Squad Bumblebee.
The seemingly odd choice for this figure’s coloration is explained by the fact that it was originally intended for Universal Studios’s Transformers: The Ride – 3D, just like ”As Seen In Parks Megatron”, but due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, Universal had to temporarily close its theme parks. Looking for another outlet to release the two figures instead of waiting for the pandemic to be over, Hasbro made them both available as ”shared exclusives” between several online retailers in the US, such as Hasbro Pulse, BigBadToyStore or Entertainment Earth. While it was too late to completely redesign Megatron’s packaging, N.E.S.T. Bumblebee was still in an early enough stage of development that Hasbro could change the packaging design and brand him as part of the Bumblebee film, despite never sporting that color scheme in the film itself. Though not in the official product description or box, one official promotional image branded the toy as part of Generations Selects.
The official promotional render of the figure’s packaging humorously misspells Bumblebee’s name as Bumblbebee. It’s only been 37 years, guys. (It’s spelled correctly on the actual packaging.)
