Title:
Clocker
Description:
Clocker (Scout Class, 2005)
Takara ID number: GC-12
Takara release date: February 10, 2005
Accessories: Engine-blaster, left & right side-pipes, Speed Planet Cyber Key
Cyber Key Code: s129
Known designers: Eric Siebenaler (Hasbro)
Part of the Speed Planet theme, Clocker transforms into a Velocitronian open-topped race car, complete with driver’s and passenger’s seats (why?). Plugging a Cyber Planet Key into his rear assembly pops up a pair of thrusters with pull-out non-firing blaster barrels. This assembly becomes a hand-held weapon for robot mode. He also has a pair of removable side-pipes that can also be used as hand-weapons.
The Hasbro and Takara versions of this toy go about two different ways of creating the same color layout... bizarrely, Takara’s version of "Skids”, which came out first in the third wave of Takara’s Galaxy Force product, is doing a lot of work to emulate the Hasbro "Clocker” color layouts in ways it doesn’t need to. Skids is cast in vaguely-pearlescent white, pale-orange and clear-blue plastics, with his biceps, head, and gun base painted light blue. The edges of his upper chest are also painted blue, and the insides/undersides of his weapon’s gunbarrel housing are painted orange to match the unpainted blue/orange plastic of the Hasbro version’s layouts. His chest and head are also decorated with much darker, blood-red paint, and the undersides of his feet are painted black to blend into vehicle mode better.
Hasbro’s "Clocker”, released in the second wave of Cybertron Scouts, is cast in more vibrant orange, light-blue and clear-blue plastics, heavily painted with pearlescent white. His colors are overall brighter and more vibrant. Clocker also has the exhaust pipes on his sides painted silver rather than the Takara version’s unpainted white, plus an Autobot faction symbol on his hood that the Takara version does not include. And, of course, Clocker’s Cyber Key has a Cyber Key Code on its back. Additionally, Clocker (and all subsequent releases of the sculpt) features at least two minor tooling differences compared to Skids: the 5mm pegs on his exhaust pipes have been slightly shortened in order to make it easier for him to hold both with the same hand at the same time (also, the pegs now have holes in the center instead of being solid), and the hinge on his back is no longer secured in place with metal pins on both ends, instead just featuring plastic bumps that allow for the hinge to be detached if too much force is applied.
This mold was also used to make Cybertron Swerve and the live-action movie universe Clocker. It was also retooled for the Timelines versions of "Axalon Cheetor” and "Unit 2” Tigatron. It was also the model for the many non-toy characters that make up the Maximal Command Security Force.
