Title:
Ultra Magnus
Description:
Ultra Magnus (Leader, 2008)
Japanese ID number: TA-27
Accessories: Magnus Hammer
Known designers: Eric Siebenaler (Hasbro)
Part of the second wave of Animated Leader Class toys, Ultra Magnus transforms into an 8-wheeled Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck, and wields a giant, spring-loaded, expanding hammer with which to... hammer things. He can simply grip it in his hand, or one can attach it by inserting the tab on the handle into the slot in his palm. Aside from his hammer, he also features a grand total of twelve guns, ranging from the two large boosters/cannons on his back, each with another cannon on top, two small triple-barreled cannons on his vehicle front/shoulders, and two mini-guns at the front, all of which can be hidden in both modes for show-accuracy, or deployed for Blowing-Up-Everything-accuracy. Pressing the red button on the side of the vehicle mode activates laser sound effects and causes his boosters/cannons to light up yellow, and rotating his shoulders to tab/untab them activates transformation noises.
In robot mode, pressing his Autobot symbol will make the symbol, his eyes, and cannons light up, make his mouth open, and make him say one of three phrases: "Don’t be a hero, Optimus. It’s not in your programming”, "Ultra Magnus here”, and "We must return the Allspark to Cybertron.” Unlike his fellow speaking Animated toys, however, he is not voiced by Magnus’s in-show actor, Jeff Glen Bennett, although somewhat ironically, whoever is providing the toy’s voice actually does a better Robert Stack impression than Bennett does.
He is capable of wearing the Headmaster accessory that’s included with Leader Class Bulkhead, although this does not activate any gimmicks.
Unfortunately, there are reports of problems with the sounds on several units for this release. Some have partial sounds or no sounds at all, while others have overly sensitive sensors for the shoulder joints, leading to transformation sounds every time you move the arms. Also, an inordinate number of units suffer from notably poor quality control of the face’s paint applications. (This can at least be checked before you buy, since the toy is packaged in robot mode.)
The Japanese TakaraTomy release coats most of his plastic parts in shiny metallic paint.
