Long before professional wrestling, Verne Gagne was an accomplished amater wrestler at the University of Minnesota capturing an AAU title, four Big Ten Conference championships, two NCAA championships, and a U.S. freestyle wrestling alternate spot on the 1948 Olympic team.
Debuting in 1949, Verne quickly gained momentum in the NWA, capturing his first title in 1950, the World Junior Heavyweight Title.

Standing 5 11, 200 lbs, Verne was a 10-time AWA World Heavyweight Champion, and may best be remembered in the ring for his feuds with Nick Bockwinkel and Mad Dog
vachon. Verne’s most legendary 9th title reign lasted over 7 years, dropping the title to Nick Bockwinkel in November, 1975.

Regarded as one of the godfathers of professional wrestling, Verne’s legacy lives on as he is remembered as a legendary wrestler, trainer, and promoter, forever leaving a lasting impact on the sport of professional wrestling.
