The original Generation 1 Hot Rod toy was reissued by Walmart once again in 2023, this time under the branding of Transformers Retro. However, this release, which was given specific The Transformers: The Movie branding, gives the mold a redeco with colors based on his original cartoon character model. This results in the first Hot Rod toy to accurately represent the shade of pink he is actually depicted with in the movie! For better or worse, the original mold’s chromed pieces are now a flat white plastic instead. All of Hot Rod’s details are achieved with tampographs rather than stickers.
The box features original art by Marcelo Matere of Hot Rod in robot and vehicle mode laid over a scene of the interior of one of the Autobot shuttles featured in the film. Interestingly, the art appears to use Studio Series 86 Hot Rod as a model.
Transformers Retro Autobot Hot Rod was announced and went up for preorder on October 6, 2022 as part of Walmart’s Collector Con event.
