Title:
The Prideful Goat
Description:
Age: 6Yr
Proof: 115
Source: MGPi
Mash Bill: 95% Rye, 5% Malted Barley
Our first Prideful Goat releases were a great example of an older, more mature Kentucky spirit without the puffery and insanely inflated pricing we see in the hobby today. We thought long and hard on what to do next and thus, The Prideful Goat Straight Rye Whiskey was born. This 6 year 95% Rye from an all too familiar Indiana distillery is not new to the market. It is however another line in the sand as far as pricing is concerned.
While whiskey used to be a lot more inexpensive, we are dedicated to doing everything possible to keep costs low and trying to maintain the most reasonable pricing in current and future releases on the market. The Prideful Goat Straight Rye Whiskey is a fantastic, reasonably priced straight rye whiskey that is meant to be shared amongst friends.
Nose:
Caramel, lots of toffee, graham cracker, cloves, cinnamon, some citrus and lots of baking spice. The nose on this one has a lot going on. It’s sweet with a bit of darkness to it. With some swirling and time the ethanol settles down which allows the toffee and caramel notes to shine while the spice stays well balanced in the mix. It smells like a toffee flavored spicy graham cracker. The nose on this is fantastic.
Palate:
Very nice mouthfeel. Damn, this is really good! All the sweet and dark toffee notes from the nose held over to the palate like nobody’s freaking business. Still getting a delicious and surprising amount of toffee, caramel and still some citrus on the whole palate in a really big way. After the toffee-fest, the baking spice kicks in and covers the palate with a good amount of viscosity. The overall balance is very well maintained making this a very easy sipper drinking way below its proof.
Finish:
The baking spice covering your cheeks and palate stick around for quite a while. In the end you are left with subtle leather and somehow that dark sweetness manages to stick around after all is said and done. I like this finish but the nose and palate are the stars of this show and I’m very okay with that.
Conclusion:
I discovered this rye from a whiskey YouTube channel called ADHD Whiskey. It’s a well done show by Matt Porter whose hilarious dry humor is second to none. Matt’s pretty spot on and his recent review of this rye intrigued me enough to buy it and I’m glad I did. This little goat has exceeded my expectations and is a good value to boot. I’ve seen other MGP sourced ryes out there with a similar or same age statement and proof for more money. The Prideful Goat 6 year is a super enjoyable rye and I’m loving every sip of this stuff. I’m giving this prideful horned beast an 8.
