Ardbeg BizarreBQ, a limited edition, barbecue-inspired single malt Scotch whisky created in collaboration with Christian Stevenson (AKA DJ BBQ).
The back label indicates that Ardbeg BizarreBQ has been matured in a combination of double charred oak casks, Pedro Ximénez Sherry casks, and experimental BBQ casks (oak toasted over a brazier packed with seaweed and birchwood).
Ardbeg BizarreBQ will be bottled at 50.9% ABV and is described as having notes of “hickory smoked ham, grilled artichokes, flamed steak, and cinnamon dusted espresso.”
Nose:
Greasy smoke, spicy, sweet, fruity, lemon, raspberries, some pepper, intense, some dark chocolate, a pinch of cinnamon, actually like a well-marinated steak on the grill, caramel, the chocolate now dominates, is fun on the nose
Taste:
Oily, sweet, sherry directly, raisins, red fruit, then the greasy smoke, slightly citrus, good drinking strength, some salt, cinnamon chocolate, spicy, very drinkable
Finish:
Dark, a lot of smoke, citrus, greasy, a little nut, as a small drawback at the end maybe a little quickly gone
Nose:
Puffs of charcoal and soot mingle with smoky wood and aromatic herbs and spices. Treacle toffee, hickory smoked ham and cinnamon-dusted espresso rise up. A splash of water releases distinctively sharp citrus aromas, along with herbal notes such as fennel and aniseed. Grilled artichokes and a suggestion of seared meat sizzles the senses.
Palate:
The mouthfeel is alive with spice, like BBQ ribs smothered in chilli. A myriad of deep, warming smoke follows close behind in flame-grilled steak, chilli oil, cured leather and clove. Ginger, aniseed and tar crackle on the palate with an aromatic woodsmoke edge.
Finish:
The aftertaste lingers long and bold, with ginger, aniseed and with an aromatic woodsmoke.
