Title:

JURA Superstition Single Malt Islay Scotch Whisky

Description:
Discontinued

An official lightly peated bottling of Jura first released in 2003 and discontinued shortly before the launch of the new range in 2020. Founded in 1810, it was not until the early 1960s, under the aegis of MacKinlay MacPherson Ltd that the Isle of Jura distillery became a true player in its own right in the Scotch whisky industry. Despite its geographical proximity to Islay, like Bunnahabhain and Bruichladdich, it produces an unpeated malt, destined for use in the group’s blends, MacKinlay’s, Cluny and Whyte & Mackay. Nonetheless, in the early 1970s, its owners equipped it with an 8 year old version in a violin-shaped bottle that would go on to become its trademark. It was not until Whyte & Mackay Ltd bought it in the mid-90s that its range would be enriched with older bottlings, notably in the Stillman’s Dram range, such as Jura 27 Year Old, Jura 30 Year Old and a 10 Year Old Cask Strength. It was, however, only really in 2010, 200 years after it was founded, that the distillery revealed its true potential with outstanding 30, 36 and 40 year old versions, as well as numerous vintage bottlings, including 1974 and 1975

Jura is an island wrapped in superstition.
Never cut peat before May. Always finish a bottle of Jura on the day it’s opened. There is a litany of strange and bewildering customs on Jura but maybe the one regarding the Ankh cross demands the greatest attention.

This ancient symbol dates back to Egyptian times and is long rumoured to bring good fortune. Just so long as you drink the whisky in the correct manner. The islanders believe that good luck comes by holding the bottle with the Ankh cross in the centre of your palm.

Observe this ritual, they say, and good health and fortune will surely follow.

Crafted from a selection of the finest aged Jura single malt whiskies, this mysterious spirit has a unique style and character, where tastes of spice, honey, pine and peat with a whisper of smoke make a dramatic impact.

Nose (Aroma):
• Light honey sweetness with a gentle cereal malt backbone
• Hints of pine resin and nutmeg
• A subtle whiff of smoke, more incense-like than coastal peat
• Dried fruits (raisin, date) appear after a few minutes in the glass

Palate (Taste):
• Starts sweet and malty (honey, toffee, brown sugar)
• Herbal notes: pine needles, light spice (ginger, cinnamon)
• Nutty undertones (almond, hazelnut)
• A soft peat smoke, delicate rather than dominating
• Mid-palate shows a touch of licorice and roasted coffee beans

Finish:
• Medium length, slightly dry
• Lingering smoke with hints of oak spice and bitter chocolate
• Light sweet malt remains in the background

Character:

Jura Superstition was crafted to sit between Jura’s lighter expressions (like Origin / 10yo) and their peatier ones (like Prophecy). Its hallmark is the balance of subtle sweetness and a whisper of smoke. The Ankh cross on the bottle became iconic, tying into Jura’s branding of mystery and island folklore.

💡 Collector’s Note: Since it’s discontinued, bottles are increasingly collectible. In auctions, Jura Superstition usually fetches around $70–90 USD retail when it was available, but now secondary market prices can push higher (approx. $100–150, depending on condition and region).
