The last overproduction of Agave Teauilana occurred at the end of the 20th century. Planting was way ahead of demand and in 1999 and 2000 fields were full of beautiful mature agave. But at 1/2 a peso per kilo, it was not worth the effort and cost of harvesting, that’s if you could find a buyer. In Sierra Occidental Jalisco, Raicilla country, there were many farmers of blue weber, who would typically supplying tequila, producers. Maestro Raicillero Don Guelo had a friend that offered him Tequilana, if he could harvest it before it was too late. He had as much agave as he could handle at his little Taberna and made around 5000 liters of single distilled raicilla from Agave Tequilana Weber Azul. In his region, Maximiliana is king and sale of his Raicilla Azul were slow and the majority of it sat resting in glass.

Fast forward to present and La Venenosa has bottled this extremely special raicilla that was produced from single estate Agave Tequilana Weber Azul that was cooked using black oak in an adobe oven before being ground by hand, wild fermented and single distilled before being rested in glass for 20 years.
