Title:

Memory Drawers

Description:
This box has five drawers that can only be opened in reverse of the order in which you last closed them. This order will change everytime you close the drawers in a different order.

Zougan is the Japanese traditional handicraft of marquetry and Tobizuru means cranes in flight. Sections of yosegi pattern around the sides. The box is 200mm long.
Artisan Hiroshi Iwahara, see hanko (signature stamp) in photo 3.

Apparently it works as follows:
This work memorises 120 (the factorial of 5) kinds of turn to open the drawers. The big base is full of 30 device plates. The plates move vertically and horizontally and change the arrangements when you open or close the drawers.
The work automatically memorises the order you just closed the drawers and changes the turn to open the drawers next time.
In theory, 6 kinds / 25 plates are needed to realise this system.
But actually 3 kinds / 30 plates are used.
