Catalogue Note
Femme a la robe orange is an exceptionally rare oil painting by Mai Trung Thu, as the Vietnamese modern master devoted most of illustrious career to painting in the traditional medium of silk. The artist graduated from the first class of the Ecole des Beaux-Arts d’Indochine in Hanoi in 1930. The school’s curriculum attributed great significance to the development of East Asian artistic techniques, while also incorporating European media and practices. Amongst Mai Trung Thu’s earliest paintings are some remarkable works on oil on canvas, executed with incredible verisimilitude and proficiency of this Western medium. These early oil on canvas works are the rarest paintings in Mai Trung Thu’s body of work.

The painting Young Girl (1934) by Mai Trung Thu is one of the treasured pieces of the Vietnam National Fine Arts Museum collection. A mere 3% of the artist’s works that have surfaced at auction were painted on canvas, only eight of which are figurative paintings. Mai Trung Thu’s Femme a la robe orange is therefore especially significant and outstanding. It was painted in 1937, the same year the artist left Vietnam to move to France. The work was executed during his final year as a professor at the Khai Dinh High School in Hue, where he had been appointed a prestigious teaching post in 1931. Rejecting an arranged marriage in Vietnam and drawn to the vibrant art scene in Paris, the artist moved to Paris in 1937 with Le Pho and Vu Cao Dam.
