Title:
Sennin Chokaro
Description:
Unsigned
ca 1780
Height: 5.0cm
Katabori. Ivory; details stained black, rich patina.
The sennin Chökarõ (Chinese: Zhang Guolao) dances and stamps his feet in delight as he tips his magic horse out of a small gourd, one hand holding back his long sash. The voluminous sleeves and hem of his long gown swing back to accentuate the force of his energetic movements. Renowned for his magical powers, Chökaro was offered the hand of one of the emperor’s daughters in marriage, but declined, preferring the freedom of nomadic life. His horse was able to carry him for great distances, never needing nourishment. When it was not needed, it disappeared into his gourd.
