Explorers of The North Sea

Explorers of The North Sea is Part of the three-game trilogy comprising The North Sea Saga, along with Raiders and Shipwrights (both of the North Sea). The North Sea Saga is a trilogy of games that follow the progress of the Viking culture. Each game is unique and follows a different time period. All three may be played as a campaign using The North Sea Runesaga even though each is mechanically quite different.
So gather your warriors, it’s raiding season!

Explorers of the North Sea is set in the latter years of the Viking Age. As ambitious sea captains, players seek out new lands to settle and control. They will need to transport their crew among the newly discovered islands to capture livestock, construct outposts and fulfill various other goals. So ready the longships, there are new horizons to explore!

Gameplay Overview
Each player starts with 7 Vikings and a Longboat on a shared, central Island. From there players will place tiles and begin to venture out to the newly discovered Islands.
Proceeding clockwise from the starting player, each player takes their turn in full. On their turn, players first place 1 of their 3 tiles, expanding the game board. They can then take up to 4 actions (any number of the following):

1. Load Longship
2. Unload Longship Deliver Livestock
3. Move Longship Destroy an Enemy Ship
4. Move Vikings Raid a Settlement
5. Transport Livestock
6. Construct an Outpost (costs 2 actions)

After taking their actions, players draw a new tile to their hand, ending their turn.

End of the Game
The game ends immediately after the turn where the player holding the Winter Token has no more Tiles in hand. This should be exactly 48 turns (there are 48 Tiles). Victory Points are gained from:

1. Delivered Livestock
2. Constructed Outposts
3. Destroyed Enemy Ships
4. Raided Settlements
5. Viking Deaths
6. Controlled Islands
7. Captain Cards

The player with the highest total is the winner!

The aim of Explorers of the North Sea is to become the most prestigious Captain through clever planning and navigation. Players gain Victory Points (VP) by controlling Islands, delivering Livestock, raiding Settlements, constructing Outposts and destroying Enemy Ships. The game ends at the dawn of winter. At this point, the player with the most Victory Points is declared the winner!

BGG:
The gist of Explorers is that each player gets one long ship, seven Viking meeples, a unique leader with an end game scoring bonus, and three randomly drawn map tiles. Players take turns that start with placing a single map tile to the game board, placing any livestock, enemy ships, or settlements shown thereon. Tile placing is then followed by four actions of the player’s choice. Actions include building one of your five outposts, picking up or dropping off livestock and vikings, raiding settlements, and destroying enemy ships (possibly – hopefully? – sending a meeple to Valhalla in the process).

48 Hex Tiles (cardboard 2.75” across x 1.5mm thick).
2 Double-sided Starting Boards (cardboard 7.75”x6.75”).
12 Enemy Ships (double-sided cardboard hex 22mm across).

Wooden components:
26 Livestock Tokens (15x10x8mm), in 6 types: 6x pink Pigs, 5x orange Chickens, 5x gray Goats, 4x white Sheep, 3x black Cattle, 3x brown Horses.
14 Settlement Tokens (14x17x5mm red pennant-shaped), with numerals: 2x #2, 5x #3, 4x #4, 3x #5.
28 Vikings (9x17x8mm in 4 Player colors).
20 Outposts (15x15x14 in 4 Player colors).
1 Winter Token (60x45x8mm, gray wolf/moon).

Plastic components:
4 Longship models (45x 17mm, in 4 Player colors - red, blue, yellow, green).
