As wave after wave of rebel troops came roaring over the bleak terrain west of the bucolic Tennessee town of Murfreesboro, Union commanders George Thomas and William Sherman tried valiantly to stem the tide of the federal rout as Bragg’s men rolled on towards the Nashville Turnpike.
