Synopsis:
Set in 1932 on death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary, the story is narrated by Paul Edgecombe, the prison’s head guard on ”the Green Mile,” the long green-floored corridor leading to the electric chair. Paul and his fellow guards supervise condemned inmates while trying to keep order and preserve a measure of humanity inside the brutal world of the prison.
The routine of executions and confinement is upended when John Coffey arrives—an enormous, quiet man convicted of the rape and murder of two young girls. Despite the horrific charge, Coffey’s gentle nature and mysterious, seemingly miraculous abilities force Paul to question the truth of Coffey’s guilt and confront the possibility that something supernatural has entered their lives.
As extraordinary events unfold—healings, visions, and revelations—Paul is pushed toward an impossible moral choice: what justice truly means, who deserves mercy, and what it costs to do the right thing in a system built to end lives. The novel builds toward a devastating conclusion that haunts Paul long after the Green Mile has claimed its prisoners.
