The author: Joan Swallow Reiter grew up on a historic pathway to the west. Route 40, referred to since pioneer times as the National Road, wound past her home in Richmond, Indiana, one of the towns that posted “Madonna of the Trail“ statue memorializing pioneer women of the west. Her own great-great-great-grandparents settled in Indiana Territory in 1807, when it was the still forest wilderness. Mrs. Reiter was it a writer-editor for Time-Life Books before becoming a freelance based in New York.

THE COVER: Women move west on horseback and my waggon in a romanticize early 1850s painting, “the pioneers ““, by William rainy. Fairy crossings were long and arduous, and to keep the Lowe’s light the women would take only the bear is the Cesery‘s for pioneer housekeeping. The front piece: Dressed up for the photographer in her Sunday best, a new arrival in Colorado mining camp put on a brave display of feminine gentility, undaunted by the frontier surroundings or a scene stealing burro.
