Synopsis:
Stevens, the longtime butler of an English country house, undertakes a motoring trip through the West Country in the 1950s. As he travels, he reflects on decades of service at Darlington Hall and on the ideals of dignity, professionalism, and loyalty that shaped his life. His memories revisit the pre–World War II years when his employer, Lord Darlington, pursued political influence and appeasement, and when Stevens’s unwavering devotion led him to suppress personal feelings.
Interwoven with the journey is Stevens’s relationship with the former housekeeper, Miss Kenton, and his growing realization of what his restraint and misplaced loyalty may have cost him. The trip becomes an elegiac reckoning with the decline of the old English order and with the “remains” of Stevens’s own day—what is left of his life and the possibility, however small, of change and human connection.
