Synopsis:
A labor of love, The Ties That Bind is an encyclopedic examination of the people, places, events, and recordings significant in the artistry and thirty-plus year career of one of America’s most eminent and enduring rock icons. Ranging from the Academy Awards to Warren Zevon and all points in between (including the mighty E Street Band), the encyclopedia examines all aspects of the Springsteen universe, including artistic, intellectual, and personal relationships, influences and the influenced, significant others, career evolution, recordings, side ventures, political forays, geographic bases, and, of course, legendary shows and venues.
With 300 entries (plus sidebars) and 100 photos (many previously unpublished), this is the first book that systematically and objectively chronicles Springsteen’s life and music. Plus, The Ties That Bind provides lists of concert appearances, television appearances, and E Street Band tribute bands and tribute albums; the text of Springsteen’s Rock & Roll Hall of Fame speeches; and a lyric index, amid other comprehensive indexing. Damon Gough (Badly Drawn Boy) and Mike Mills (of R.E.M.) each contribute nicely written forewords.

Library Journal
Graff, a contributor to the New York Times and Rolling Stone, and his team of experts present a valuable encyclopedic resource on the life, career, and influence of rock legend Bruce Springsteen. In addition to the obvious entries-like the E Street Band-Graff includes entries for individuals and bands that influenced Springsteen (Elvis Presley, Bob Dylan), those who were influenced by Springsteen, musicians who have performed with Springsteen, and those who have recorded important cover versions of Springsteen songs (Patti Smith, Elvis Costello). Also included are an index, a lyrics index, a bibliography, a listing of all known Springsteen concert appearances, a discography of covers of Springsteen’s compositions, a listing of important guest appearances by Springsteen, and several other such lists. Bottom Line This first reference on ”The Boss” comes close to being the definitive study, except that the A-to-Z format does not allow for Springsteen’s career to unfold chronologically. The book becomes essential, however, as a companion to the many biographical and critical analyses on Springsteen. Highly recommended for all public and academic libraries.-James E.
