Synopsis:
In a harsh, unforgiving world ruled by merciless tyrants, Jebel Rum is the thin, scrawny and publicly humiliated youngest son of Wadi’s famed executioner, Rashed Rum. When his father announces his retirement and a brutal contest to choose the next state executioner, Jebel is dismissed as too weak and unworthy. Determined to reclaim his honor and win the right to wield the executioner’s axe, he embarks on a perilous quest to the distant mountain of the fire god Sabbah Eid, who is said to grant invincibility and great strength to those who survive the journey and offer a human sacrifice.
To gain this power, Jebel must travel with a slave, Tel Hesani, promised as the sacrifice at journey’s end. Together they cross deserts and hostile kingdoms, passing through lands scarred by slavery, religious fanaticism, lynch mobs, suicide cults, monstrous creatures and even more monstrous men. As Jebel and Tel Hesani face torture, betrayal and constant mortal danger, Jebel is forced to confront the cruelty of his own culture, his casual acceptance of slavery, and the cost of treating another human being as expendable. Their nightmarish odyssey slowly transforms Jebel’s understanding of power, faith, justice and compassion.
Inspired in part by Mark Twain’s ”Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” and Philip Pullman’s ”The Firework-Maker’s Daughter,” ”The Thin Executioner” is a dark, fast‑paced fantasy and coming‑of‑age tale in which heads roll, gods demand blood, and the greatest crime of all may be simple kindness.
