Synopsis:
Set in early twentieth-century rural Georgia, this epistolary novel is told largely through letters written by Celie, a Black woman who survives repeated abuse and oppression.
Over decades, Celie’s life is shaped by violent men, poverty, and separation from those she loves, while her relationships with other women—especially the charismatic singer Shug Avery and the strong-willed Sofia—help her discover community, desire, self-worth, and independence.
As Celie finds her voice, she begins to reclaim her life and build a future on her own terms, confronting trauma, faith, family ties, and the meaning of love and freedom.
