Summary
The character in the chair is the protagonist and sits on a chair while he reads a paper. Sam-I-Am prances by riding on an animal with a sign and grabs the character’s attention who is annoyed by the interruption. Sam-I-Am then asks whether the character in the chair likes green eggs and ham. He replies no.

Sam-I-Am will not take no for an answer and barrages the main character with many different ways to eat the green eggs and ham. He asks if he would eat them in a house with a mouse. He offers to serve them in a car or on a train. Next Sam-I-Am suggests that the character eats the green eggs and ham in a boat. The character refuses each time until finally Sam-I-Am breaks him down.

The character in the chair tries them while a whole slew of animals watch him. A smile emerges and he claims that he likes green eggs and ham. The character in the chair adds all the different ways he would enjoy green eggs and ham and thanks Sam-I-Am for sharing them with him.

Analysis
The character in the chair shares his dislike of Sam-I-Am as soon as he sees him. He already knows Sam-I-Am and expects he has come to pester him. The character quickly refuses to try the green eggs and ham. He says that he doesn’t like them even though he has never had them. Sam-I-Am does not give up easily and a power struggle ensues. The character in the chair refuses but doesn’t explain why he won’t try them. Sam-I-Am uses what he knows about the character in the chair to entice him and finally breaks him down.

The character in the chair represents close-minded thinking in the story. He is uncomfortable with trying new food especially one that Sam-I-Am recommends. He says no to something he may enjoy because he does not want to take a risk. The character learns that the eggs and ham may not be bad just because they look different. The character in the chair could be anybody who judges what they don’t understand.

A lesson from Green Eggs and Ham is to not be afraid to try new things. Readers see how the character in the chair would have missed out on something he enjoys if he hadn’t tried it. Theodor Seuss Geisel’s use of green for the color of the food mimics a common vegetable color. Some children and adults are hesitant to try green food items. Green also symbolizes nausea and can indicate spoilage of food and this may connect readers to the character’s hesitation to try the green eggs and ham.
