Synopsis:
Harriet and her family spend the summer in Water Mill, Long Island, where her friend Beth Ellen Hanson (”Mouse”) is also staying with her grandmother. Anonymous notes with a religious slant begin appearing around town, exposing the ”sins” of local residents, and Harriet becomes determined to discover who is leaving them.
Harriet draws Beth Ellen into spying expeditions and suspects various townspeople, including anyone who reads the Bible. As the mystery unfolds, Beth Ellen must also confront personal turmoil when her wealthy, absent mother Zeeney returns from Europe with a new husband and tries to remake Beth Ellen in her own image.
Beth Ellen ultimately realizes she wants independence and a future on her own terms. As summer ends, she asserts herself and refuses to be taken away by her mother, choosing freedom and self-determination.
