Synopsis:
Mary Lennox, a sickly, sour and neglected child raised in colonial India, is suddenly orphaned and sent to live with her reclusive uncle Archibald Craven at Misselthwaite Manor on the Yorkshire moors. Lonely and bored in the vast, gloomy mansion, Mary begins exploring its echoing corridors and windswept grounds. She learns of a locked, long-abandoned walled garden that once belonged to her late aunt and has been shut up ever since her death.
Through a series of discoveries and with the help of a friendly robin, Mary finds the hidden door and secret key to the garden. Inside she encounters tangled roses, overgrown paths and a sense that something sleeping is waiting to wake. As Mary, guided by nature-wise local boy Dickon, begins to clear the weeds and tend the plants, she slowly transforms from a cross, self-centered girl into a kinder, stronger, and more curious child.
Mary also discovers another secret of the house: her frail, hysterical cousin Colin, who has been kept indoors, convinced he is doomed to die young. Drawing him into the fresh air and into the work of restoring the secret garden, Mary and Dickon help Colin grow in health, courage and joy. As the garden blooms again in color and life, both children undergo their own inner rebirths, and even the grieving, distant Mr. Craven is drawn back toward love, hope, and his family.
The novel intertwines themes of the healing power of nature, friendship, emotional resilience and the idea that care, curiosity and affection can revive both people and places that seem hopelessly shut away.
