Synopsis:
Thomas Pynchon’s The Crying of Lot 49 is heralded as one of the greatest works of fiction of the 20th century and a hallmark of postmodern fiction. Pynchon’s novels have garnered the reputation of being somewhat abstruse or daunting. I hope to dispel that myth in these posts. I’ve chosen The Crying of Lot 49 as a starting place, because it is the shortest and most easily digestible of his novels. It is also his most widely read novel and the one most likely to be taught in Literature courses.
The Crying of Lot 49 was originally published in 1966. It is Pynchon’s second novel after 1963’s V., which won the William Faulkner Foundation Award for best debut novel and was nominated for the National Book Award.
