Synopsis:
In the seemingly ordinary steel-mill town of Hopewell, Illinois, a hidden and ancient evil stirs within Sinnissippi Park. Malevolent creatures known as feeders lurk in the shadows, feeding on fear, anger, and hatred as tensions rise around a long and bitter steel strike. Drawn by terrifying prophetic nightmares, John Ross, a Knight of the Word, comes to Hopewell. In his dreams he walks through the hellish future that will come to pass if he fails, and he knows that someone in this town is about to unleash an unspeakable horror on the world.
At the same time, fourteen-year-old Nest Freemark struggles with powers she barely understands. Guided by her alcoholic grandmother and aided by a tiny sylvan named Pick, an owl, and a mysterious wolf-like guardian called Wraith, Nest secretly works to maintain the mystical balance in Sinnissippi Park and keep the feeders at bay. As the hottest Fourth of July weekend in decades begins, Nest senses that something is terribly wrong. A demon has come to Hopewell, intent on using the town’s anger and despair to achieve his dark purpose, and Nest herself is at the center of his designs.
While families gather for holiday picnics and fireworks explode overhead, the quiet Midwestern town becomes the battleground in a struggle between the Word and the Void, between hope and corruption. John Ross and Nest must confront the demon, uncover long-buried secrets about Nest’s family, and face shattering revelations about the nature of her powers and the true cost of resisting the Void. Before the holiday ends, innocence will be lost, loyalties will be tested, and the fate of humanity may hinge on the choices of a haunted man and an extraordinary girl.
