Synopsis:
The oddest thing about Les Trois Mousquetaires is its title: the novel is clearly about four musketeers. The adventures of Athos, Porthos, Aramis, and D’Artagnan, who were drawn from actual historical figures - Charles de Batz de Castelmore, Comte D’Artagnan, was a captain in Louis XIII’s guards - electrified first Paris and then the world. Dumas, until then known only as a Parisian playwright, found himself ranked as a novelist with Dickens and Scott.
Dumas wrote the book with Auguste Maquet, who was also his collaborator on Le Comte de Monte Cristo. Maquet supplied the historical background and mapped out the chapters; Dumas did the writing.
A classic swashbuckler, the novel is full of duels, intrigue, and betrayals. The musketeers fight valiantly for their king and against the scheming Cardinal Richelieu, united under their rallying cry of "Tous pour un, un pour tous!” ("All for one, one for all!”).
