An alternate-history novel told from the perspective of a Jewish boy growing up in Newark, New Jersey, imagining what might have happened if American hero Charles A. Lindbergh—an isolationist with sympathies toward Nazi Germany—defeated Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1940 U.S. presidential election. As the Lindbergh administration pursues policies that normalize antisemitism and undermine democratic norms, the narrator’s family and community confront escalating fear, division, and pressure to assimilate or relocate. The story follows the destabilizing effects on everyday life as political extremism seeps into neighborhoods, schools, friendships, and family relationships, threatening the safety and identity of American Jews while the wider nation drifts toward authoritarianism.
