Synopsis:
Lobsters and madness
The most surreal surrealist
From soft clocks to the celebrated giraffe in flames, this work celebrates the fantastic world and extravagant personality of Salvador Dalí, one of the most visionary and prolific artists of the 20th century. Provocative, eccentric and of great technical skill, Dalí revolutionized the concept of creator with his art of consumption and his controversial character. An indispensable book about the man with the most iconic mustache in the world.
Painter, sculptor, writer, filmmaker and an authentic showman, Salvador Dalí (1904-1989) was one of the most exhibitionist and eccentric characters of the 20th century. Pioneer in introducing the ideas of Freudian psychoanalysis into art, he is famous in particular for his surrealistic practices, with ideas such as the soft clocks or the lobster phone, which have become icons of the surrealist movement and of modern art in general.
Dalí used to describe his paintings as ”photographs of dreams painted by hand”. The precise representation of bizarre elements and their inconsistent disposition create an inviting tension and interest. He himself explained that he painted with ”the eagerness of the most imperialist precision,” but only ”to systematize the confusion and contribute to the total discredit of the world of reality.”
With his peculiar mustache he revolutionized the role of the artist by representing a controversial figure in the public sphere and creating works that, besides being contemplated on the walls of galleries, could be consumed in the realm of graphic arts, fashion, advertising, writing and film.
This book uncovers the paintings and personality of Dalí, showing not only his technical prowess but also his provocative compositions and stimulating themes such as death, decadence and eroticism.
