DESCRIPTION & ANALYSIS
The post-war recession which led to high unemployment in 1947 also affected the U. S. Mint, as the coining of cents fell from nearly a billion pieces at Philadelphia in 1946 to less than a fifth as many in 1947. Roughly 200 persons were laid off at that mint in November.
Though certainly not rare in Mint State grades, 1947(P) cents are exceedingly difficult to find in top grades. The most frequently encountered problems are spotting and streaking.
Varieties are quite limited for this issue, and only the better ones will be recognized by NGC.
