Title:

Barber Half Union (1877)

Description:
The Legend Returns
In the years following the California Gold Rush, a problem emerged: too much
gold, and not enough paper money. To fix this issue, the U.S. Senate authorized
the creation of $100 and $50 gold coins named the Union and Half Union.
These would have been the largest circulating gold coins in U.S. History!
Barber’s Legendary Design
Unfortunately, the bill died in the House of Representatives - but U.S. Mint
Director Henry Linderman still had Chief Engraver William Barber create a
pair of Half Union ”pattern” proofs. Though rumors spread amongst the
public of their being lost or melted down, the original proofs, classified as
Judd-1548, reside safely within the Smithsonian.
The ”Large Head’ Pattern
These Proofs are modeled after Barber’s ”Large Head” design for the $50
Half Union, which features a flowing hair style and additional details.
Officially Authorized by the Smithsonian
With permission from the Smithsonian, these Barber’s 1877 Half Union Pattern
Copper Proofs recreate the Chief Engraver’s $50 ”Large Head” Half Union Design.
1.25 Ounces of 99.9% Pure Copper
Instead of the original gold, each proof is struck in 1.25 ounces of pure copper.
Certificate of Authenticity
We hereby confirm that this Half Union 1.25 Copper Pattern Proof is authentic in
all respects, modeled after Barber’s original ”Large Head” S50 Half Union Pattern.
